Nathan was born in Hardin County July 14, 1843. His father, Joseph Davis, was a native of Wake County NC, born February 7, 1805. Joseph came to Maury County, TN in 1829 where he was a blacksmith. In Hardin County, he married Harriet Perry, a native of Williamson county, but a descendant of North Carolinians. Nathan was the 8th of 14 children. He enlisted in the Ninth Tennessee Cavalry, under command of J. B. Biffle. He was married November 12, 1868, to M. A. Johnson of Hardin County. Her father was from Hardin County , but her mother was born in Alabama. Seven children were born to Nathan and M. A. Those living at the writing were Thomas J., William N., Benjamin F., Edgar H., and Mary E. Two children, James S. and an infant had died. November 24, 1882, Mrs. Davis died and Nathan then married Mary R. (Stephens) Harrell in January, 1883. She was the daughter of Col. H. H. Stephens who was born in Boone, Bourbon County, KY. Her mother, Elizabeth Tharp Stephens was the first white child born in Florence, Alabama. At the writing, a son, Perry, had been born to Nathan and Mary.
