Curry Pettigrew Dennison
Curry P. Denison, proprietor of the Denison House, Decaturville was a native of Decatur County,
born November 11, 1839, a son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Ingram) Denison, both natives of Pittsylvania County, VA . Of their family of 14 children, all were living at the time of the writing but 3: Robert born September 16, 1814 was a farmer in Henderson Co ; Alfred born in 1817, and died in 1821 ; Bird born July 30, 1818, was a farmer of Henderson Co ; Eliza born August 12, 1820, married John McCall and moved to Chester County ; Anna born December 12, 1822 married a Newton and moved to Denton County TX ; Sanford born December 14, 1824, moved to Red River County TX ; William H. born January 24, 1826, moved to Red River County TX ; Jackson born June 10, 1829, and died July 26, 1859 ; Benjamin born May 18, 1831, moved to Red River County TX ; Nancy J. born May 22, 1833, married Andrew McCall of Henderson Co ; Minerva born September 22, 1835, married a Priddy of Henderson county ; David G. born September 1, 1837, and died in 1863 ; Curry P, the subject ; and Mary Elizabeth born May 15, 1844, married a Brewer of Henderson County.
Stephen Denison participated in the war of 1812. He was a Whig and died in August, 1865, his wife in September, 1860. The grandfather was a Virginian who had fought under Gen. George Washington. Curry was a merchant in Henderson County for a number of years and then a farmer. He then became the proprietor of the Denison House in Decaturville. He was a Republican and a supporter of the Union during the Civil War. He was a strong advocate of public schools. November 4, 1860, he married Nancy J. Bray, born November 2, 1845, a daughter of John and Manerva (Walker) Bray, of Henderson County. Their children were Fredonia A. born March 14, 1863, who married February 28, 1879, to J.T. Rogers a merchant in Decaturville; Kittie A. born October 17, 1864, married Dr. John McMillan, of Decaturville; William R. born April 13, 1866 who lived in Perryville ; Mary A. born January 25, 1868, married January 14, 1883 to William Barry, editor of Progress in Lexington ; Granville L. born February 18, 1870 ; Harriet Rosetta born February 3, 1873 ; Bertha L. born February 13, 1880; and Allie J. born March 13, 1884.
