Dr. J.N. Houston, a son of John L. and Jane (Graham) Houston, was born in Decatur County January 22, 1837. In the summer of 1857, he began to practice medicine in Perry County, at Brown's Mills. After 4 -5 months, he returned to Decatur County where he continued his medical practice. At the outbreak of the war, he enlisted with the 52nd TN Regiment of the CSA under the command of Col. B. J. Lee where he was assistant to the surgeon of the regiment at the hospital and the battle of Shiloh. After 12 month's service he returned to Decatur County where he married Sarah E. Chaney, who was born near Cincinnati, Ohio. Their children were: John F. born August 21, 1864 ; Thadeus E. born March 26, 1866; Laura B. born November 21, 1867 ; Charles H. born February 20, 1869 ; Jefferson P. born January 13, 1871 ; Cora E. born November 17, 1872 ; Albert L. born September 23,1874 ; Sidney C. born November 23, 1877 ; Mary M. born March 6, 1879 ; Claudia M. born October 10, 1880 ; Eliza Jane born September 23, 1883, and died October 6, 1884. He was a Republican and a Mason.
