This Houston family came from Scotland to America settling in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The Houston family of Decatur County is composed of 9 branches - the 9 children of John Lucky and Jane (Graham) Houston. John was born in Fayette County, Kentucky to Peter and Sarah Jane (Lucky) Houston. He moved to Decatur county around 1818 and settled about 1 mile south of Bear creek Church.He and Jane were the parents of the following children: Joannan born July 11, 1820 who married Nathaniel Barnett on October 30, 1838; Jefferson Perry born February 11, 1822 who married Jane Lofton; John Gresham/Graham born March 11, 1824 who married Martha Analize Arnold; Sara Jane born December 16, 1826 who married first Burrell Rushing and then Renny Rains; Laverne Ann born April 6, 1828 who married James E. Arnold; Eliza born February 14, 1830 who died unmarried at the age of 19 on September 19, 1849; Martha Ann Lucky born January 22, 1833 who married Rennie Rains and died July 17, 1863; James/Thomas Newton born January 22, 1837 who married Sarah E. Chaney; and Samuel Madison born February 8, 1839 who married Mary H. Jennings.
