WILLIAM SAMUEL MAXWELL
W. S. was the son of Benjamin Maxwell and Katheryn Howard. He was born in Roane County, TN in 1821. He married Sophronia Howard in Columbia, Tennessee on 26 December 1846. W. S. graduated from Knoxville Law School in 1842 and served in the House of Representatives from Perry and Decatur Counties. He was part of the first assembly to occupy the capital. In 1860, he was appointed Attorney General for the 12th District and served until he enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, serving with Forest's Cavalry. He was captured in the Battle of Nashville. After he was paroled , he moved to Columbia and later to Centerville. Then he moved to Los Angeles where he practiced law. In 1879, he moved to Decaturville and formed a law partnership with J. W. Daugherty. He remained in practice until 1884 when he moved to Ilano, Texas where he served as a judge for 9 years. In 1893, he retired and moved to Huntingdon, Tennessee where he died 24 January 1913. His son Benjamin Howard was born in 1857 and married Alice Hendrix, daughter of H. V. M. Hendrix and Sara Wesson, on 15 October 1879.
