ARTHUR TOLLEY
The Tolley family moved from Carroll Co. to Decatur Co. ca 1827-1850. This family of 7 children of William Tolley who was perhaps the son of Jonathan Tolley came from North or South Carolina by way of WVA and KY to Carroll Co., settling near Huntingdon. These 7 children were George, Arthur, Martha, Joe, Nerve/Manurvia, Rachel, and one other sister whose name is not known. George stayed in KY and family lost trace of him. Martha married a Chester. Rachel and Joe did not marry. Manurvia married Lewis Jones. She was born 22 July 1823 and died 8 June 1896. She was buried at Mt. Lebannon Cemetery. Arthur was born in Carroll Co. on 2 April 1827 and married Morning Rushing from Decatur Co. She was born 15 January 1833. Their children were: George Alston born 30 December 1853, James Arthur born 20 November 1858, Martin Andrew born 25 January 1862, Joseph Thomas born 29 August 1866, and Samuel Jackson born 13 May 1872.

Arthur was an expert in hewing logs which were used in many buildings in the county including the Mt. Tabor school which was still standing in 1944. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church. He fought as a Union soldier, enlisting on 18 September 1862 in Co G, 6th Regiment, TN Cavalry under Capt. W. C. Webb.

Morning Tolley died on 14 February 1873 and was buried at the "old" Tolley Cemetery. Arthur then married Mary Skinner Ready, widow of John R. Ready. Their 2 sons were Dolph and Dossie Ready.

Arthur and Mary were the parents of Mary Ellen born 11 February 1879 and Lucy born 12 March 1882.

Arthur died in 1898 and Mary died in 1908. They were both buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.

All of Arthur's sons moved to Henderson Co. TN ca 1900 except Joseph Thomas who married his step sister Dossie Readey. James Arthur returned to Decatur Co. after a few years and operated a General Merchandise Store in the Camp Ground Community. He is buried at the Camp Ground Cemetery. Arthur F. Tolley, son of Samuel Jackson, was a mortician in Decatur Co and half owner of Parsons Mortuary. He was manager of the Holcomb Produce Co in Parsons and the bridge between Parsons and Decaturville is named for him. John T., another son of Samuel Jackson, was Sheriff of Decatur Co during the 1940's and served in WWI. William Madison, a son of Martin Andrew, was a principal of Decaturville High School in the early 1920's. Bud Tolley and Jess Tolley, sons of James Arthur were accomplished musicians.
