Nominated as an athlete/coach/official (football, baseball, basketball)... Personal: born in 1922 & raised in the Rock Hill area of Henderson County; deceased 1985 and buried at Rock Hill Cemetery; attended Rock Hill Elem. School (RHES) '28- '34, Lexington City School (LCS) '34- '36, Lexington High School (LHS) '36- '40, Middle TN State Univ. (MTSU) '40- '42 & '46- '48 obtaining a BS degree & George Peabody College where obtaining a Masters degree... Athlete: played basketball at LCS two years 7th & 8th grades; was an outstanding lineman (end) and punter on LHS football teams in late 1930s & considered a TN All-State player, games & scores not known for-some years, but teams very successful under Paul Caywood during those years; may also have played basketball & baseball in high school; after HS graduation, went to Ole Miss as football player in fall 1940, but left school before enrolling; accepted football scholarship to MTSU playing two yrs of freshman & varsity ball; left for WWII military service '42- '46; returned to MTSU & played final two years '46 & '47 varsity football as a lineman (end) & punteij; team record in '46 was 5-3-1 & '47 9-1; played semi-pro baseball for the Lexington Chicks as an outfielder during the late 1930 and 1940s... Coaching: accepted head football coaching position at Pulaski (Giles Co.) High School (PHS) in 1948 & coached thru 1954 with teams going 49-21-6; two teams had 9-2 records on seasons, the '49 team traveled to Lexington & beat LHS 25-0 in second year of the Rotary Bowl; coached three yrs. in football Bobby Gordon who went on to be an outstanding tailback at UT; coached boys basketball at PHS for six years; coached Winchester High School (WHS) football three yrs. with an overall record of 21-9, the '56 team went undefeated at 11-0 on year; accepted assistant football coaching position at MTSU in '58 and coached five years with teams going 106-45-7, the '59 team went 10-0-1; head baseball coach at MTSU two yrs. or '60 & '61 with teams going 11-10... Official: accepted Physical Educ. Dept. faculty position at MTSU in 1963 and taught PE & officiating through 1981; football official in TSSAA & Ohio Valley Conf. during this period; served as TSSAA South Central area Supervisor of Officials for 11 years... Honors & Awards: considered an TN All-State football player at LHS in 1939; PHS 1953 Class Annual dedicated to Jack Deere; Pulaski, TN dedicated football field as the "Jack Deere Football Field" with an archway... Civic: served as principal of Pulaski High School for two years '52- '54; devoted husband and father of two girls; served country in WWII military service... Hall of Fame: elected to MTSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1985... Nomination by William Hamlett & other former players at Pulaski/ Giles C. HS.
