History of Cedar Grove
Henderson County TN
Excerpt from Scotts Hill History - Gordon Turner 1977

The daughter of Thomas Hart was born in NC and the family came to TN when she was a child. Among the provisions brought by this family for a permanent settlement were steers, a wagon and horses. They crossed the Tennessee River by ferry at Clifton. She was terrified at having to cross the river and was allowed to hold on to some part of the ferry all the way across and firmly believed that only t his prevented it from sinking. It is said that in wilderness travel one of the most annoying trouble is the straying of horses. They must eat and be turned loose to feed on the pasturage available. After awhile they will start to wander off. The Hart family turned their stock loose to graze. They also wished to eat their own dinner and rest awhile from the journey. Their stock also wandered off in the woods and when time came to go they could not be found. The older members had to go round them up. However, any annoyance experienced because of this was offset by the surprise of a new baby colt that followed the mare back to camp. The little Hart girl was allowed to claim it for her pet as long as it lived. They continued their journey until they reached a place west of Cedar Grove and near Saris which was later known as the Andy Austin place.
