Decatur County Chronicle May 15, 2007

Completion of the restoration of an important piece of Scotts Hill, Henderson/Decatur County history is on schedule. The Doe Creek one room log schoolhouse located on Doe Creek Road a few miles south of Scotts Hill was completely disassembled earlier this year. Every effort is being made during the restoration to ensure that it retains its original appearance. During the disassembling of the 24' x 30' hewn lo structure, each piece of the building was labeled so that it could be placed back to its original location. Deteriorated logs have been replaced with new ones; although sawn they have been dressed by a broadax to give the apearance of being hewn to match the original logs.

Preservation Specialist, Michael Thomas Gavin from Middle Tennessee State University provided the restoration committee with the Physical Condition Assessment and Restoration Recommendations. Once restoration is complete, it is likely to be accepted by the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Site.

In the photo to the right Michael Gavin, MTSU, points out work being done on Doe Creek school building to Dave Hinman, Channel 11. (Dave Hinman was here taping the progress of the restoration for a special TV presenation in a few weeks.

The cost estimate for the restoration was $93, 600 if the work were performed by a professional company. However, that figure should be considerably lower because of donations of the large yellow popular logs, labor from CCA Clifton Prison and local volunteers providing labor. Jund raisers are also expected to generate some of the funds. THe Four-Fold Gospel group will be performing "Live" Saturday 6:30 PM May 26, 2007 at the City Park in Scotts Hill. Supporters wishing to donate can register for a print of Confederate War hero Nathan Bedford Forrest that will be presented to the lucky winner at the completion of the project. The print is on display at Scotts Hill City Hall.

On the left - Earl Dyer, Sue Maness, Helen Duck, Doris Gary are being interviewed by Channel 11's Dave Hinman, sharing memories as students at Doe Creek School.

Jerry Taylor who is spearheading the project extends his appreciation to all who have donated their time and resources to the project. He estimates completion within 60-90 days. At that time there will be a gathering at the school to celebrate the completion and to show appreciation to all who played a part in making it happen.
