The Bible of Joseph & Rebeccah Lanier Williams

The following Family Record was copied by Rev. James King Stringfield at Panther Creek, N. C. June 1, 1864 while there visiting his g. uncle, Nicholas Williams. He states that t he birth-records were in the handwriting of his great grandfather Joseph Williams and that his was a faithful verbatim copy.

Joseph Williams was born 27th of March 1748. And departed this life on the 11th of August ½ after 2 o'clock in the morning 1827.

Rebeccah (Lanier) Williams was born the 27th day of January 1757 and departed this life on the 20th of March 17 minutes after 10 o'clock in the morning 1832.

Joseph and Rebeccah Williams were married 16th, Sept. 1772

Inclosed in this record group is the following typewritten history, unsigned.
Reps Jones was born in the year 1742 and died December 25, 1803. He was a native of Southwest Virginia, and emigrated to Tennessee about 1783, settling on the Nolichucky River, one of the early settlers of what later became Cocke County. When Cocke County was organized in October 1797 he was one of the seven commissioners selected to locate the seat of justice and superintend the erection of the county seat, at what was known as "Fine's Ferry." The log court house was erected and used until 1828, when a new brick building was built. On Jan. 22, 1794 he purchased a 200 acre tract of land lying "in the county of Jefferson, and on the south side of the Nolichucky, from James Todd for the consideration of 200 pounds in hand paid."
Daniel Jones I, son of Reps Jones, was born Feb. 22nd 1776. He married Mary Harrison, June 28th 1798. Mary Harrison was born Oct. 9th 1775. Daniel Jones served in the war of 1812.

James L. Litton's occupation was farmer, School teacher, he also practiced Law. He was the first school teacher to teach school in the Vicinity of Oneida. He was interested in local government, assisted in organizing Scott Co. Was a successful farmer and prominent citizen of the community. He served several terms as Justice of the Peace, and member of School board. He was also a member of a committee who located the county seat of Scott Co. (Tenn.) The following are the names of committee appointed to locate county seat: James Litton, Isaac Reed, David Butram, Riley Chambers and Henry Massengale. Locted county seat at Huntsville.
