Alexander M. Jones was born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., September 18, 1823, and is the son of Julius A. Jones, who was also a North Carolinian, and immigrated to Tennessee in 1826. Before leaving his native State he was married to Martha Walker, daughter of Matthew Walker, farmer, and the fruits of their union were four sons and one daughter, our subject being the second of the family. On coming to Tennessee the family settled at Poplar Creek, and here Julius Jones followed farming until his death, August 28, 1831. His wife died August 7, 1877. Alexander M. was reared on a farm, and received such education as the limited facilities of the country afforded at that early day. January 26, 1848, he married Martha E. Montgomery, who was born March 7, 1825, and died April 17, 1859, leaving her husband and one son, Julius C., who was born May 31, 1849, to mourn her loss. January3, 1860, Mr. Jones married Sarah J. Snodgrass, to whom one son and three daughters were born - Ada L., Rush A., Fannie B. and Martha E. Mrs. Jones was born at Snodgrass Springs, Tenn., January 1, 1829. Mr. Jones served in Coll. Wilson's regiment of cavalry for some time during the war, and was in a number of hard-fought battles. After the battle of Fort Pillow, sickness prevented further service. He is a Democrat and Mason, and owns 400 acres of land about five mile, from Jackson. He and Mrs. Jones are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
