ELLIS KINDER

Major League Baseball Player. The right-hander pitched for the St. Louis Browns from 1946 to 1947, the Boston Red Sox from 1948 to 1955, the St. Louis Cardinals in 1956 and the Chicago White Sox from 1956 to 1957.

He posted a career record of 102-71 with a 3.43 earned run average. The Browns traded him and Billy Hitchcock to the Red Sox on November 18, 1947 for Sam Dente, Clem Dreiseward, Billy Sommers and $65,000. Kinder blossomed in 1949, going 23-6 with 252 innings pitched.

With the American League pennant on the line, Kinder faced New York's Vic Raschi at Yankee Stadium with the two teams tied for first place on the last day of the season. The Bronx Bombers scored a run in the first, and the two pitchers pitched shutout ball into the eighth.

Boston manager Joe McCarthy lifted Kinder for a pinch hitter, but the Yankees pounced on Mel Parnell and Tex Hughson for four runs and held off a Red Sox rally for a 5-3 victory and the pennant. Kinder became a relief pitcher in 1951 and posted a 10-1 record with a league-leading 14 saves.

In 1953 he led the AL with 27 saves.
