CIVIL WAR
The Martyrs of Jackson
West Tennessee Whig - Friday April 25, 1862 Editor
Transcribed from Family Findings July 1972
In common with many others, our own community has been made to feel the discomforting ills of this cruel war, in the loss of several of our most promising youth. They fell on the battle field of Shiloh, nobly and valiantly contending for the rights of freeman, and the maintainance of their Country's institutions. In our endeavour to relieve the sufferings of the sick and wounded in our midst, we are apt to forget those brave martyrs who sacrificed their young lives on the altar of Southern independence. They have gone from among us, some of them in the pride of youth, when life was in its spring, full of hope and virture resolutions. Let us revive their memories; and in after years let the names of
JOSEPH FREEMAN, ISAAC JACKSON, JOHN CAMPBELL, THOMAS McCORRY, JAMES HADDAWAY, and AUGUSTUS EPPINGER, be mentioned to our children to inspire them with true courage and patriotism.

Also transcribed from the same newspaper was the following:
The cowardly Yankees, unwilling to fight like brave men have invented steel breast—plates to shield the chest and absomen. As they are in the habit of running so often in an engagement we would suggest to the little white-livered scoundrels the propriety of having a shield for the other side, about "half way" the person.

"MUSTERED IN" transcribed from the "West Tennessee Whig", Jackson, Tennessee, Friday, May 17, 1861.
On the 15th inst., the following six companies of infantry volunteers, all raised in Madison County, were mustered in at Jackson by Assistant Inspector General, Alexander W. Campbell:

We learn that another company, raised in the 14th and 17th Civil Districts, is now completed, and will be mustered in within a few days; making in all seven companies for Madison County. Can any of our neighbors beat this, in proportion to voting population.
