Perkins Family
Joshua and Highly Perkins
Joshua Frye Perkins,son of Amos and Nancy Pierce Perkins was
born in Monroe County, Tenn.,July 18, 1844. He grew to manhood in Tennessee and
on August 7, 1861 in Montgomery County Kentucky enlisted in the Civil War, in
the 4th Ky. Inf. Vol. Co.C. He obtained the rank of waggoner. On August 8,
1862 at Camp Deschard, Tennessee he was discharged because of pulmonary
tuberculois.
On September 29,1864 at Covington, Kentucky Joshua
reenlisted in Co. E. 53rd Reg. Inf. Vol. and received an honorable discharge on
September 15, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
Highly Perkins, daughter of Joshua C. and Sarah Cooper
Perkins was born in Letcher County, Kentucky July 17, 1850.
Joshua and Highly were married in Fayette County, Illinois
on December 27, 1867. They lived in Illinois and Indiana until heading west in
1875 and settling on a homestead in Hall County on the South Loup River west of
Grand Island.
Highly taught school in Hall and Adams
Counties.
They lived on their homestead on the South Loup until 1889
when they moved to Round Valley in Custer County. In 1900 they moved to Loup
County and settled on a claim seven miles northwest of Taylor. Joshua and
Highly were the parents of seven children: Claud, Hannah, Mary, who died in
infancy, Laura, Clara, Sidney and Perry. All six children took homesteads in
Loup County. Hannah, Laura and Clara were teachers in the rural schools. All
three of them taught terms at District 23 (Sunnyside). Claud was a veteran of
World War I and II. Joshua died March 4, 1920 and Highly July 21, 1934. They
are buried in the Kent Cemetery.
