Dobson, John H. (1819-1858)

HOUSE, 32nd General Assembly, 1857-59; representing Meigs, McMinn, and Polk Counties; political affiliation not shown. Born in Blount County on September 10, 1819; son of Joseph Dobson. Extent of schooling undetermined; occupation: farmer and harness maker. Married in Monroe County on October 18, 1849, to Anne R. Wright, a native of North Carolina. There were apparently two children: Mary C. and John H. Dobson, as Anne R. Dobson was appointed their guardian in 1867. Mrs. Dobson returned to Monroe County after her husband's death. At one time Dobson was postmaster of Benton, Polk County, where he made his house. Probably a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Died in Benton on November 9, 1858; buried in Town Cemetery, Benton.

Fouts, Madison Taylor (1847-1924)

HOUSE, 42nd General Assembly, 1881-83; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; contesting and winning the seat of J. G. Stuart; SENATE, 46th General Assembly, 1889-91; representing the counties of Bradley, James, Meigs, McMinn, and Polk; HOUSE, 48th General Assembly, 1893-95; representing Loudon, Monroe, and Polk Counties; Republican. Born in Georgia, exact place not stated, on August 9, 1847; son of Noah L. and Malinda (Coxey) Fauts. Extent of schooling undetermined. Occupation: merchant and farmer; resident of Parksville, Polk County, at time of legislative service. Married to Nancy Jane Taylor; date and place of marriage not given; nine children: Nellie, Julius, Carl, Henry, Max, Don, Onie, Mrs. Lynn D. Arnold, and Mrs. Ernest McDavis. Sometime after 1900, he removed to Cleveland, Bradley County. Acting postmaster of Cleveland, 1912; election commissioner for Bradley County, 1912; commissioned coal oil inspector for Cleveland, 1921. Member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Died in Cleveland on October 19, 1924; buried in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland.

Guinn, Charles C. (1898-?)

HOUSE, 64th General Assembly, 1925-27; representing  Bradley and Polk Counties; Republican. Born at Benton, Polk County, on February 11, 1898; son of John and Margaret (Morris) Guinn. Attended public schools of Polk County; Draughon's Business College, Nashville, 1918; graduated in law, 1920, form Cumberland University, Lebanon, Wilson County. Attorney; practicing law at Benton and at Etowah, McMinn County. Maiden name of wife, Rena T., and names of children, if any, not given. First to introduce legislation to create the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Last address of record (1968): business, 110 1/2 9th Street; residence, 319 North Washington, Etowah.

Hancock, M. H. (c.1827-?)

HOUSE, 40th General Assembly, 1877-79; representing Bradley and Polk Counties; Republican. Born c.1827 in Cocke County; son of William W. and Sarah Hancock. No information on extent of schooling. Removed to Polk County about 1837; occupation: farmer. Married to Sutiza Davis Thurman, a native of Georgia; date and place of marriage not given. Six Children: John M., Sarah E., William H., Sutiza, James M., and Mary Ann Hancock. In Civil War: a major in the state militia at the outbreak of war; entered Confederate Service as captain of Company B, 29th Tennessee Infantry. Deputy sheriff of Polk County, 1848; sheriff, 1856-61, 1870-74, 1888-92; clerk and master, chancery court, 1893-1903. He spent his declining years in Texas, where he died, date and exact place unknown.

Hughes, John (c.1811-1855)

HOUSE, 25th General Assembly, 1843-45; representing McMinn, Monroe, and Polk Counties; party affiliation not shown. Born C. 1811 in Greene County; names of parents; extent of education not given. Occupation: farmer in Polk County, near Mt. Harmony, McMinn County. Married after his legislative service, in McMinn County, on March 31, 1853, to Frances Discretion Isbell, daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Parks) Isbell. Two children, one of whom was Benjamin Isbell Hughes; the name of the other not given. The family removed to Jacksonville, Texas the same year of their marriage. Hughes died there in 1855.

Jarnigan, Addison S. (c. 1823-1888)

HOUSE, 34th (confederate) General  Assembly, 1861-63; representing McMinn, Meigs, and Polk Counties; political affiliation not shown. Born c. 1823 in Tennessee, exact place and date; names of parents unknown. Extent of schooling undetermined; he studied law and was an attorney at Ducktown, Polk County. After the war he bore the title "Colonel," but the nature and extent of his participation in the Civil War, other than his membership in the Confederate General Assembly, is unknown. He was married in Knox County, on November 29, 1842, to Mary Webb, daughter of John Webb; no children listed. Sometime after the war he removed to Kansas, where he died a week or two before December 13, 1888. No further record available.
