Roane County was founded in 1801. It was named in honor of Archibald Roane. He served as Governor of Tennessee 1801-1803, member of the 1796 Constitutional Convention, judge of the Superior Court of Law and Equity 1796-1801; judge of the Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals 1815-1819.
