Scott County was founded in 1849. It was named in honor of Gen. Winfield Scott, veteran of the War of 1812. Commanded successfully the southern thrust into Mexico City during the Mexican War. He served as chief of staff of the Army until 1862. He was then the military adviser to the President up until the time of his death.
