Smith County was founded in 1799. It was named in
honor of Daniel Smith, Colonel in the Revolutionary Army. He surveyed and made the first map of Tennessee. Was
secretary of the Territory South of the Ohio River, then was later senator from Tennessee 1798-1799 and 1805-1809.
