Duval County lies
In the southwest part of Texas; San
Diego, the county seat. is 63 miles from Corpus Christi. This county
was created from portions of Live Oak, Nueces and Starr Counties
in 1858 and organized In 1876. It was named for Burr H. Duval, who
fought in the Texas Revolution and was killed in the Goliad Massacre..

The original Duval County had three important
towns, San Diego, Benavides and Hebbronville. San Diego remains the
county seat of Duval, as it has since the organization of the county.
Benavides became the county seat of Dunn County, while Hebbronville was
accorded a similar honor for Jim Hogg County.
