| Kenedy, one of the last counties to be organized in Texas, was formed from Willacy County in 1921. The county is named for Captain Mifflin Kenedy, a native of Pennsylvania, who originally came to Texas during the Mexican War. An experienced steamboat captain, he was employed by the United States Army to transport troops and supplies to destinations on the Rio Grande. Joining Kenedy in his steamboat operations on the Rio Grande was a native of New York, Richard King. In 1852 King bought a 75,000- acre Spanish land grant, half of which he sold to Kenedy. The partnership in steamboating and ranching prospered until they dissolved the partnership in 1868. King's portion of the land grew into the famed King Ranch, still prominent today in ranching and breeding operations, while Kennedy organized the La Parra Ranch now totaling some 400,000 acres. The name of The county seat, Sarita, established in 1904, is the Spanish name for Captain Kenedy's grandaughter, Sara. His son, John J., established :he ranch headquarters at Sarita and provided the land for the courthouse and other major buildings. Today Sarita is the point of departure for large shipments of cattle. In 1916, a hurricane struck the town and drove many of the residents away. And again, In 1999 Hurricane Bret struck the county, but damage was minimal due to the county's low population. A wind turbine plant is being built near Sarita and is expected to slightly raise the population of the area. The population as of 2000 was 200. | |||||||||||||
