Hemphill County
Created in 1876 from Bexar County, it was named in honor of John Hemphill, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas.

It is situated one county south of the extreme northeast limit of the State on the northand joins the Indian Territory on the east, and is in what is known as the Panhandle of Texas.

Two battles of the Red River War of 1875-1876, the Battle of Lyman's Wagon Train and the Battle of Buffalo Wallow,  took place in September 1874, in what would become Hemphill County.

The first rodeo of Texas took place in Christian on July 4, 1888
