The county seat is Dumas, which is named for Louis Dumas, originally from
the Sherman, Texas, area. The Dumas Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Moore County. Moore County history
is highlighted in the Window on the Plains Museum in Dumas.

Created from Bexar County in 1876 and organized in 1892. Named for Commodore Edwin. Ward. Moore, the
commander of the Texas Navy. Situated in the northern part of the Panhandle.
Area, 885 square miles. Surface rolling prairie soils, rich sandy to chocolate loam. There is abundant surface
water and an almost inexhaustible supply of underground water at depths ranging from 225 to 270 feet. All crops
common to the Panhandle are produced in Moore County. Irrigation is practiced in a limited way. Dumas is the county
seat. There are no railroads in the county. A line la being constructed from Dalhart, which will pass through Dumas.
