Created in 1870 from Hopkins and Lámar Counties and organized the same year. Named for its location and shape, being a wedge lying between the north and south forks of the Sulphur branch of the Red River. Area, 266 square miles. Three-fourths of the county is suitable for cultivation and all staple crops as well as many kinds of fruit are grown. The cotton grown in Delta County Is of the long staple variety and commands top prices. Cooper, the county seat, is located on the Texas Midland Railroad. Ben Franklin is also an important town In the county. Nat Corbet, a former resident of New York, established the first store in the county at Ben Franklin in 1845.
