Salt Lake County,
Utah
Committee of the Grand Jury
Divorce Report
Notes on File in the
Third District Court
The original notes show that
from Sept. 1, 1874 to Sept. 1, 1875, that 84 divorces were granted; from Sept.
1, 1875 to Sept. 1, 1876, 77 divorces were granted; from Sept. 1, 1876 to Sept.
1, 1877, 343 divorces were granted; within three years the Salt Lake County
Probate Court had granted 504 divorces.
These decrees were obtained
chiefly through the following divorce shysters:
Boyce, Isaac C.---(New York City)
Byrne, G. R.---(Jackson Co., Mich.)
Dana, Frank M.---(Fon du Lac, Wis.)
Davis, E. A.---(Cass Co., Ill.)
Dexter, A. J.---(Chicago, Ill.)
Flanders, J. W.---(St. Jo Co., Mich.)
Furlong, Jesse K.---(Kings Co., N. Y.)
Goodrich, A.---(Chicago, Ill.)
Jaques, W. J.---(New York)
Lawrence, James H.---(San Francisco)
McMillan, D. H.---(Erie Co., N. Y.)
Montgomerie, C. H. P.---(Chicago)
O’Brien, James W.---(Boston, Mass.)
Powers, Peter---(St. Louis, Mo.)
Robinson, M. S.---(Chicago)
Sappenfield, E. M.---(Vigo Co., Ind.)
Sewell, Charles---(Salem, Mass.)
Sims, G. R.---(Chicago)
Smith, Sam T.---(New York)
Stilley, W. R.---(Tuscumbia Co., Ala.)
Swim, D. K.---(San Francisco)
Wegener, F. O.---(San Francisco)
White, N. G.---(Lawrence, Mass.)
Williams, T. J.---(Page Co., Iowa)
Williams, W. R.---(Boston,
Mass.)
All of these individuals
figure as notaries public in the documents on file in the Probate Court of Salt
Lake county, and the fellow Montgomerie seems to have a divorce agency both in
New York and Chicago. They have their lines all laid with a number of shysters
in this city, who are in cahoots with the Probate Courts of the Territory and
thus the infamous business is carried on—a perfect warfare upon the martial
relations of the civilized world.
