DOROTHY ALLEN

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Dorothy (Strong) Allen, 92, of Middlebury, formerly of Shrewsbury, Mass., joint owner of a local contracting business for many years, died Friday in Porter Medical Center after an illness.

Her husband of 49 years, Donald T. Allen, died in 1978. She leaves a daughter, Judith A. Peterson of Middlebury; a sister, Suzanne Filkins of New London, N.H.; and four grandchildren. A daughter, Louise A. Gennert of Shrewsbury, died in 1975. She was born in Greencastle, Ind., daughter of Howard M. and Judith (Darby) Strong, and lived many years in Shrewsbury, Mass., before moving to Vermont in 1982. She graduated from Wheelock College in Boston.

She and her husband owned and operated Allen Contracting Co. in Shrewsbury for many years before they retired. She was previously an elementary school teacher at two private schools in the Boston area. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury.

Graveside services will be held at a later date in Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Mass. There are no calling hours. Sanderson Funeral Home, 117 South Main St., is directing arrangements.

RICHARD D. ALPIN

86, WAS AGRICULTURAL ADMINISTRATOR

A memorial service for Richard D. Alpin, 86, of Lee, N.H., a retired milk market administrator, will be held in the First Congregational Church, West Brattleboro, Vt., on Monday at noon. He died of cancer Sunday at the Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y.

Mr. Alpin, who retired in 1973, devoted his professional career to agriculture. From 1946 to 1973, he was milk market administrator in Boston and other southern New England markets for the US Department of Agriculture, except for 1953, when he spent the year in Washington as an assistant secretary of agriculture.

A resident of Wellesley while serving in the Boston area, he was assistant milk market administrator for Boston from 1933-46.

Before that he was extension economist in marketing at the University of Vermont and from 1927-30 he was agricultural agent for Addison County, Vt.

Mr. Alpin was a native of Putney, Vt., and a graduate of the University of Vermont in 1924. The university honored him with an honorary degree in 1954 and 10 years later gave him its Alumni Distinguished Service Award. In 1971, he received the Agricultural Adventurers Award of the Eastern States Exposition.

He was married to the former Amanda Davison for 60 years before her death in 1988.

He leaves a son, Richard D. Alpin of Ithaca, N.Y.; a brother, Donald, of Putney, Vt.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. --Boston Globe, The (MA) - June 23, 1990; contributed by A. Newell.

One of the pioneer merino sheep breeders in Addison County, Sumner Clark, died last week at his home in Addison.

Samuel R. Cook

Samuel R. Cook. Judge of the Probate Court, Addison District, died it his home in Middlebury on Sunday of afternoon. His health had been gradually failing for over a year past. He was about 60 years of age.

CHARLES M. FRIEDRICH

Charles M. Friedrich, 74, of Terrace Heights, Weybridge, Vt., died March 2, 1995, after a lingering illness. He was born in New York City, Jan. 13. 1921, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Friedrich of Andover. He participated in World War II in the European theater for three years, returning in Nov., 1945. For some time he was associated with the Travelers Insurance Co. Home Office in Hartford. Later, he engaged in the air conditioning and refrigeration field before coming to the Champlain Valley to dairy farm in two Addison County, Vt., locations. He is survived by Arlene, his devoted wife of 52 years; a sister, Carol Polus and her husband, Leonard, of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother-in- law, Ivan London and his wife, Elizabeth, of Manchester; and eight nieces and nephews. His request for no visiting hours is being honored. At the convenience of the family a private burial service and interment will take place at the family plot in Columbia, Ct., overlooking the lake.

ROBERT F. KELLY SR.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Robert F. Kelly Sr., 58, of 4 Gorham Lane, formerly of Worcester, Mass., was pronounced dead on arrival yesterday in Porter Medical Center Hospital after he was stricken ill at his home.

He leaves his wife, Ellen P. (Connors) Kelly; a son, Robert F. Kelly Jr. of San Francisco; two daughters, Sheila E. Hart of Yarmouth, Maine, and Colleen P. Kelly-Vaka of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, John J. Kelly Jr.. of Baton Rouge, La., and David Kelly of West Boylston, Mass., and two sisters, Marilyn Kelly-Carr of Bridport and Annemarie Fabeny of Arlington, Va. He was born in Worcester, son of John J. Kelly Sr. and Frances (O'Connor) Kelly, and lived here 28 years.

He was a production manager at Simmonds Precision Co., where he worked for 28 years.

He graduated from St. John's High School, then in Worcester, and attended Holy Cross College in Worcester. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

The funeral will be held Monday from Sanderson Funeral Service, 117 South Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 19 College St. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. H. F. Lothrop

H.F. Lothrop, a farmer and one of the most prominent citizens of Pittsford, died suddenly on Monday evening. He had represented his town in the legislature and been in the state senate; was for years director in the Baxter Nation Bank of Ruthland.

STUART NOVINS

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) - Stuart Novins, a former CBS News correspondent for 35 years who conducted the first interview from the Kremlin and participated in the first Nixon-Kennedy presidential debate, died Thursday of respiratory failure. He was 75.

Novins eventually won 50 awards for news and public affairs reporting and producing.

From 1953 to 1960, Novins was the moderator on "Face the Nation." He and Daniel Schorr interviewed Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev in 1957, becoming the first journalists to conduct an interview inside the Kremlin. He later covered Khrushchev's political collapse.

Novins had another first in 1959 when he interviewed Fidel Castro and provided a live report as the Cuban leader marched into Havana.

Novins also interviewed David Ben-Gurion, Harold Macmillan and Konrad Adenauer.

He taught journalism at the University of New Mexico after retiring from CBS in 1975.

MARIE ELIZABETH PECK

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Marie Elizabeth (Premo) Peck, 95, of Middlebury, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a longtime community volunteer and a Gold Star Mother, died July 27 in Helen Porter Nursing Home.

Her husband of 61 years, George W. Peck, died in 1983. She leaves a son, Floyd C. Peck of New Haven, Vt.; a daughter, Lucille Lewis of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; a brother, Kenneth Premo of South Hamilton, Mass.; a sister, Helen Hadley of Holden, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was a Gold Star Mother. A son, Morris Peck of Middlebury, was killed in action in Europe during World War II. Another son, William Peck of Brandon, died last year. A grandson, Roger Peck of Brandon, died about 1989. And a great-grandson, Jeremy Peck, died some years ago. She was born and raised in Worcester, Mass., daughter of Elmer and Amelia (DeLarme) Premo, and lived six years in Rutland. She lived 69 years in Middlebury.

Mrs. Peck was a volunteer for many years with Project Independence, a program enabling people to live independent lives. She was long active in community and social affairs.

A funeral service was held July 30 in Middlebury Congregational Church. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven. Sanderson Funeral Home, 117 South Main St., directed arrangements. --Worcester Telegram & Gazette (MA) - August 16, 1997; contributed by A. Newell.


William Whitford

Tho venerable William Whitford, who died at Addison was on the 11th, aged ninety-live years, was born at Shaftsbury, Aug. 14, 1781, and removed to Addison more than seventy years ago. For over seventy years he was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and daring the anti-Masonic excitement was several times expelled from the church for his fidelity to the order.

George Wilmarth

George M. Wilmarth of Addison died recently. the deceased was at one time assistant postmaster of Vergennes and afterward editor and proprietor of the Vergennes Vermonter.
