Alleghany County

Alleghany County was established on January 05, 1822 from parts of Botetourt, Bath and Monroe Counties.
It was named for the Alleghany Mountains.

During the Civil War, the iron for the Merrimac came from the Longdale Furnace in the county.
Regiments from Alleghany County were at the surrender at Appomattox.
Alleghany County is 449 square miles.
[source:  wikipedia]

Alleghany County takes the name of the great chain of mountains that forms its western border. The name Alleghany was given to the mountains by the English settlers of the north, who had received it from the Indians.
