A.M. Ritsch and little son, McCurdy Jr., spent from Saturday until Wednesday in Covington, Va.

Prof. R.C. Childs returned Monday from Elberton, Ga., where he spent several days with his parents.

Eleanor Pond, of Wakefield; is the guest of Miss Lena Edwards on Broad street.

Virginia Doss, now of Welch, West. Va., spent from Wednesday until Monday with her mother, Mrs. John Doss at her home east of town.

Tom Adams, of V.M.I., Lexington, left Saturday for school after spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Adams, at their country home, Monteflora.

Lydia Holley, of University Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Ferguson and Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Ritsch from Saturday until Tuesday.

Stephania Wells, of Centralia, spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. L.V. Carr. Miss Wells will remain here until Sunday.

James Doss, of Welch, W. Va, is visiting his mother, Mrs. John Doss, at her home east of town.

Kathleen Collins, of Burlington N.C., was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith from Friday until Tuesday.

Velma Lewis returned Sunday night after a visit to her home near Roanoke, Va.

L.S. Spurling, of Lenoir, N.C., is the guest of her mother, Mrs. L.C. Carter, on Bedford avenue.

Letitia Fanck, a member of the faculty of Blue Ridge Mission School, near Stuart, is spending the holidays as the guest of Miss Mamie Smith.

Helen Fitzgerald, of Gretna, spent from Monday until Wednesday as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Fitzgerald.

J.F. Lane, of Scottsville, spent from Saturday until Tuesday with relatives here.

Elizabeth Snow spent from Saturday until Wednesday with friends in Roanoke.

Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Loftin entertained a number of friends Friday night of last week with a dance at their home on Eighth street in honor their house guests, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mason, of Norfolk and Mrs. Pauline Cofer, of Wilmington, N.C. The music was furnished by Miss Katherine Page on banjo accompanied by Mrs. Loftin at the piano. Late in the evening refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Loftin's guests were: Dr. and Mrs. R.W. Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. P.F. Hardison, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lofquist, Mr. and Mrs. P.B. Woodward, Misses Susie McCutchen, Virginia Lane, Virginia McCartney, Gladys Robbins, Katherine Page, Mrs. H.M. Lane, C.B. McCutchen, John Lane Jr., W.W. McCartney and Dr. Carleton Moorman.

The home of
Dr. and Mrs. R.W. Palmer on Bedford avenue was the scene of a beautiful Christmas dance on Tuesday evening from 8:30 to 12:30. Music was furnished by the victrola for the guests to dance. At a late hour refreshments consisting of hot chocolate and cake were served. The guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Mamner, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Young, Mr. and Mrs. P.F. Hardison, Misses Susie McCutchen, Katherine Lane, Gladys Robbins, Virginia McCartney, Margaret Ralston, Virginia and Katherine Page, Rachael L----, Messrs. C.B. McCutchen, J.A. McCutchen, Dr. J.A. Board, T.J. Bowman, W.W. McCartney, Dr. C. Moorman, L.O. Miles, R.C. Childs, Melvin Oakes and Carson Durham.

Fire, which originated in a closet on the first floor, completely destroyed the frame residence of
E.B. Quarles, on Sixth street, about 4 o'clock Tuesday morning. The loss was partially covered by insurance.
