Hello and welcome to the Genealogy Trails website for the city of Waynesboro, Virginia. Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers.

We welcome your feedback and comments, and of course, your data contributions. If you have data that you would like to have posted on this website, please contact me.

We're looking for folks who share our dedication to putting data online and are interested in helping this project be as successful as our Illinois websites are.

If you would like to be kept informed of our state and county website updates, subscribe to our mailing lists

You are welcome to browse the information on these pages and at the many links provided to garner the data needed to continue your research into your family history. However, Please remember that this information, in many cases, represents years of painstaking research on the part of myself, or the many generous volunteers who have donated their information to this site. You can show your respect for these efforts by not taking things to use on other websites and/or to claim as your own. I thank you in advance for your consideration.

A LITTLE HISTORY on WAYNESBORO VA
The independent city is located within the land covering Augusta County.  Before the American Revolution it was located in the British Colony of Virginia.    In 1794, just after US Army General Anthony Wayne's victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the area began to be called Waynesboro.  General Anthony Wayne is the inspiration for the name.  The downtown area today was plotted and sold as early as 1798.  The town of Waynesborow was officially recognized and incorporated by 1834.  In 1810 the town had a population of 250, in 1860 the population was 457.  Waynesborow was the site of the last battle of the Civil War for Confederate Lt. General Jubal Early.  It was the final blow for the Confederate Army in the Shenandoah Valley and lasted less than a 30 minutes.  General Philip Sheridan took control of the town from General Early.  The Norfolk and Western Railways made the Waynesboro Area the junction of the two railroad lines.  This gave the town a nickname of "Iron Cross".  The land east of Waynesboro was plotted and sold in 1890.
