Committed to Providing FREE Genealogical Data For All!

..........
Hello and welcome to the Genealogy Trails website for Fairfax County Virginia.  Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers.  This is a continuation of original and highly successful Illinois Genealogy Trails, History and Genealogy Project, and we are excited about this opportunity to expand into other states.  We welcome your feedback and comments, and of course, any data contributions you might have.  If you have data that you would like posted on this website, please contact me.

We're looking for people who share our dedication to putting data online and who are interested in helping this project be as successful as our Illinois websites are.  If you think you might be interested in joining our group, please view our Volunteer Page for further information and instructions.

If you would like to receive State and County Updates, subscribe to our Mailing Lists.

You are welcome to browse the information on these pages and the many links provided, to build data needed to continue your research.  Please remember that this information, in many cases, represents years of painstaking research by many generous volunteers who have donated their information to this site. You can show your respect for these efforts by not taking things to use on other websites, and/or claiming such as your own.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Fairfax County was formed in 1742, from the northern part of Prince William County.  It was named for Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, proprietor of the Northern Neck.  The oldest settlements in Fairfax County were located along the Potomac River.  George Washington Settled in Fairfax County and built his home, Mount Vernon, facing the river.
The home of George Mason, Gunston hall, is located nearby.  Modern Fort Belvoir is partly located on the estate of Belvoir Manor, built by William Fairfax, along the Potomac.  The only member of British nobility to ever reside in the colonies, Thomas Fairfax, lived at Belvoir before he moved to the Shenandoah Valley.  The Belvoir mansion was destroyed by fire right after the Revolutionary War in 1783.

Located near Washington D C, Fairfax County was important in the Civil War.  The Battle of Chantilly, or Ox Hill, during the same campaign as the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, was fought in this county.  Bull Run is located on the border between Fairfax and Prince William County.  For most of the Civil War, Union troops occupied the county although the majority of the people remained sympathetic to the Confederacy.
