Fincastle County History
Created from Botetourt County, Virginia in 1772, Fincastle County's boundaries extended all the way to the Mississippi River. The county was abolished on December 31, 1776, and divided into three new counties: Montgomery County, Washington County, and Kentucky County. Kentucky County became the Commonwealth of Kentucky. No county seat was ever established for Fincastle County, but the colonial governor ordered it to be placed at the "Lead Mines" of Wythe County, where Austinville, Virginia, is now located. Fincastle County may have been named for either Viscount Fincastle or for his son Lord Fincastle.
