Hello and
welcome to the Genealogy Trails website for Highland County, Virginia.
Our
goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing
genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use
of all researchers.
This is a continuation of our original, and highly successful,
Genealogy Trails Illinois History and Genealogy Project and we are
excited about this opportunity to expand into other states. We welcome
your feedback and comments, and of course, your data contributions. If
you have data that you would like to have posted on this website,
please contact me.

A LITTLE HISTORY ON HIGHLAND COUNTY VA
It's county seat is Monterey. Highland County is sometimes known
as "Virginia's Little Switzerland". It was formerd in 1847, from
Pendleton and Bath Counties. Because of it's elevation, it was
named Highland. This land of high mountain valleys, sheep and
cattle grazing farms and vast woodlands is known for its pristine
scenic beauty and rural charm. It is one of the least populated
counties in the east and boasts one of the highest mean elevations of
any county east of the Mississippi River. Originally settled by
Scotch/Irish highlanders and German immigrants, Highland is now an
eclectic mix of native farm families and new residents drawn to the
high quality of life. |
