Highland County, Virginia

Founded in 1847, it was originally settled by Scotch/Irish highlanders and German immigrants

Its county seat is Monterey.

Known as "Virginia's Switzerland" or "Virginia's Little Switzerland" in reference to the steep mountains and valley, Highland County is the least populous county in Virginia, with a 2010 population of 2,321. Highland lays claim to being one of the least populous counties and one of the highest average elevations east of the Mississippi River.

The county's western border lies along the Eastern Continental Divide in the Allegheny Mountains, and the eastern border lies along the ridge line of Shenandoah Mountain.
