Accidentally Drowned - Willliam J. Spencer, a native of Nelson County, was drowned Tuesday morning in Lock No, 43, on the canal, eighteen miles below the city. He was the assistant Lock-Keeper, and was aroused about 4 o'clock in the morning to pass a boat through the lock. This was done, and in going to arrange the wickets after the passage of the boat, the night being very dark, it is supposed he missed his footing and fell Into the lock, where his body was found soon after daylight.- Lynchburg News -- United States of America, Virginia, Richmond Weekly Dispatch - Feb 2, 1870; submitted by Frances Cooley]
