County History
In 1662, Free Blacks in America were first known to be in Northampton
Co VA. The county has a long history, in the era of slavery, as a
home for free Blacks. This county was included in the peninsula
south of Maryland originally, and one of the established eight shires
in 1694. Northampton was originally called Accawmack. In
1643 it was changed to Northampton.
