SANDY RIVER

Sandy River, Jan. 1-On Monday afternoon Miss Louise Terry served a delicious dinner in honor of her guest Miss Vivian Aron. Following the dinner a number of her friends were entertained with a card party the following being present: Wallace Johnson from Hampton, Miss Grace Baines and Bill Ferguson from Danville, Miss Ivor Hairfield and Lewis Green from Axton, Misses Lizzie Fuller, Louise and Myrtle Thompson and Edward Thompson from Brosville, Miss Vivian Aron, from ----ville; Mr. Byron and Moir Towler from C—ands, Miss Pearl Hundley and Bill Allen, Jimmie D—in Jr. and Oren Minter from Sandy River and Otis Meadows from Augusta Ga. They all parted after enjoying a delectable salad course and having spent a delightful evening.
J.A. Devin, Jr., is spending the holidays with his parents.
Wallace Johnson, of Hampton, is visiting Miss Pearl Hundley.
Miss Glodys Terry, who has been attending school in Wylliesburg is at home for the holidays.
Miss Vivian Aron from Farmville, spent the weekend with Miss Louise Terry.
Miss Jessie Inman was entertained at supper Saturday night by Mrs. J. L. Minter.
Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Terry spent the weekend at Sutherlin.
Miss Louise Terry left Monday night to visit friend in Callands.
Mrs. L.R. Wyatt visited her home during the holidays.

CALLANDS, Jan. 6
Rev. G.H. Easley filed his regular appoint at County Line Sunday. There was a very large crowd considering the muddy roads.
Messrs. Garnett Finney and Stone Finney called on the misses Allens Saturday night.
Messrs. Eugene Hubbard and Harry Reynolds, who are working at Martinsville, spent the week-end at their home.
Miss Esther Marshall returned to Cascade Sunday afternoon to resume teaching after spending the holidays here with her parents.
Miss Janie Reynolds, who is teaching at Brosville High School, returned Sunday afternoon.

GRETNA
Russell D. Colbert and Miss Fannie C. Hines of Gretna were quietly married at the Methodist parsonage at 3:30 o’clock Dec. 31, rev. Jno R. G-ll officiating. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Colbert motored to Altavista where they boarded a train for a northern trip. They returned to Gretna Sunday Jan. 4, where they will reside. The bride who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs A. Hines of near Gretna has been teaching in the public schools of Pittsylvania county for a few years. The bridegroom is a bookkeeper for the Co-operative Tobacco Growers Association at Gretna.
Dr. R.W. Bennett of Toshes, Va., who has recently purchased the home of Dr. R.M. Shelton in South Gretna, has associated himself with Dr. O.L. Ramsey in the practice of medicine. Dr. Bennett has already begun his practice here but will not move his family to Gretna at present. Dr. Shelton has moved to Brunswick county.
W.C. and Blunt Mattox attended the burial of Mr. Clyde English at Leesville, Va., Monday Jan. 5. Mr. English’s death at Jefferson Hospital, Roanoke, was the result of a knife wound.
Mr. Lonnie Gamomn and Miss Maggie Bryant of near Chatham were married by Rev. J.R. Hall at the Methodist parsonage December 29.
Mrs. Pensie Mayhew, who has been confined in Jefferson Hospital for ten weeks, returned to Gretna, Jan. 5, accompanied by her daughter Miss Browny Mayhew who is a graduate nurse of this hospital and who has been at the bedside of her mother since the beginning of her illness. Mrs. Mayhew’s condition is reported to be no better.
Miss Clara James Witcher returned home Saturday from Asheville, N.C., where she spent the Christmas holidays with friends and relatives.
Elisha Bennett has returned to Norfolk, Va., to resume his work as teacher.
Samuel L. Davis returned Monday from Columbia, S.C. where he spent several days with friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Laprade of Lynchburg have returned home after a visit of several days to the latters mother, Mrs. Mollie Bennett.
Halbert Price spent the holidays in Tams and Becky, W.Va.
Dr. and Mrs. E.H. Keyser have returned from Washington, D.C., after spending the holidays with his mother.
Miss Ellen Durrette of Roanoke is visiting Miss Dorathy Graber in Anderson Heights.
Lonnie East of Greensboro, N.C., was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Reynolds.
Miss Minnie Pickrel and Elsie Hamlett of Chatham are visiting Mrs. Bessie Bailey.
G.L. Reynolds after spending the holidays with his family here has returned to his work at Omar, W. Va.
Miss Bertha Wilson of Forest, Va., was the recent guest of Mrs. J.J. Motley.
Mrs. W.B. Connor of Roanoke is guest of Mrs. B.R. Whitaker this week.
John Fitzgerald of Roanoke was guest of his cousin E.B. Fitzgerald Sr., last week.
J.E. Moon of Bluefield, W. Va., visited relatives here Sunday.
J.T. Brumfield and son Edwin of Washington, D.C., spent the holidays with his family in Gretna.
Miss Kate Gill left for Kentucky Sunday Dec. 28 where she is engaged in teaching. She spent only a few days with her parents here.
Miss Ruth Gill resumed her work as teacher at Chase City, Va., Jan. 5.
