HEADQUARTERS
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

Lexington, Virginia

This register is issued pursuant to the following action of the Board of Visitors dated June, 12, 1937:

Resolved, That a second edition of the Register of Former Cadets, published in 1927, is approved, and the Superintendent is authorized to include in the budget provision for its publication. Adopted.

The register contains a list of addresses of living alumni, and thumbnail sketches of all alumni, so far as persistent correspondence has developed this information. It serves as a ready index to the vast store of historical and biographical data in the Institute files. Colonel Joseph R. Anderson, the first V. M. I. historiographer, accumulated such information almost continuously from 1903 to 1925, when ill health staid his devoted energies. The work he so ably started has been continued; modern steel filing equipment located in a fireproof building has been provided; and several years were devoted to filing and classifying the material, which was brought to the Institute after Colonel Anderson's death in 1930. Thousands of former cadets will gladly join in dedicating this book, which will appear in the V. M. I. Centennial Year, to that grand old alumnus and beloved gentleman - Colonel Joseph R. Anderson, '70.

Care has been exercised to show the exact period of cadetship, and the class of each non-graduate is that in which he last served. Prior to September, 1930, old cadets were required to report before they knew whether or not they could progress with their class. When denied advancement they were classified as members of the following class, and, if they elected to drop out, where dropped as members of the following class, namely, a class in which they never served. An endeavor has been made to correct this and where such men did not elect to repeat a class, and where they did not so serve beyond a reasonable time (for instance, that required to make a decision after correspondence with parents), they have been retained on the roll of their class of the preceding session.

Effective and since September, 1929, when such cadets elected to leave the Institute, they have been dropped as of the last day of the preceding session.

In listing the names of initials have controlled the alphabetical arrangement, viz.: JOhn C. Doe precedes JAmes E. Doe.

The sources of information here compiled are the matriculation books, the order books, and the academic record books, all of which are intact; the personal data questionnaires furnished by former cadets, friends, members of families, etc.; and the accumulated correspondence of a century.

From 1839 to 1859 incoming letters were bound in books and have been so retained. Incoming letters of 1860 and those from 180 to 1885 are missing. From 1861 to 1925 they were filed chronologically, and these letters have been rearranged and placed in the individual files of the cadets - a laborious achievement made possible by workers assigned n 1933-34 by the Civil Works Administration.

For those who use such information, statistical tables have been inserted on pages 285-90 showing at a glance enrollment data for the first century.

The historiographer gratefully acknowledges the valuable assistance rendered by the many alumni and friends who have furnished the post-cadetship information here recorded, and especially the patient and effective help of Mrs. Alene A. Mann. The compilation was made possible by the assistance of authorities of the Works Progress Administration who assigned the following four efficient young ladies, whose help is acknowledged - Misses Mildred Whitesell, Gem Mahanes, Irene Shannon, and Gladys Hickman.

From 1844 to 1917 an occupation-register of graduates was printed in the back of the annual catalogue. Printed address-lists of graduates, arranged alphabetically, were issued by the historiographer through the Superintendent's office in 1898, 1910, 1916 and 1924; in 1920 a Roster of Graduates (arranged by class, and class standing, with thumbnail sketches and addresses) was published; and in 1927, the first register showing all former cadets was published in substantially the same form as this publication, but the information then at hand was comparatively meagre.

The aid of anyone into whose hands this publication may fall is solicited in keeping the information herein contained up to date and in correcting errors which must necessarily appear in such compilations. Communications may be directed simply "V. M. i., Lexington, Va.," and they will be gratefully received.

By direction of Major General C. E. Kilbourne, Superintendent.
