Garfield County was created out of Columbia County on November 29, 1881.
As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,266, making it the least populous in the state with about 3.2 inhabitants
per square mile
The county seat is at Pomeroy, the county's only city.
It was named after U.S. President James A. Garfield.
