60 Mile Race
Fails to Save Life of Miner.
Okanogan, Wash.-A 60 mile race over ice and snow by dog team,
bobsled, automobile and ambulance failed to save the life of Fred
White, 25 year old miner.
He died in a hospital last night after Dr. E.P. Murdock
performed an appendicitis operation.
Dr. Murdock had delayed the appendectomy five days
because the rarified air at the Azurite mine, 8,000 feet up in the
Cascade mountains, created gastric pressure which made an operation
dangerous.
The hazardous relay race in 18 below zero weather from
the mine to Okanogan so weakened the young miner's condition he was
unable to withstand the shock of the operation.
