Abe Lincoln's Cousin is Dead

Tacoma, Wash., Sept. 25 -- (by the Associated Press) -- John D. Brown, 89, said to have been a cousin of Abraham Lincoln, and a pioneer of Washington and Oregon since they were a part of the old Oregon Territory, died here yesterday.

Brown was one of a family of 16 children of Sally Hanks, sister of Nancy Hanks, mother of the martyred president. Two of his sisters, Mrs. Abbie Carr [sic; Carl?], of Portland, Ore. and Mrs. W.H. Hermann, of Myrtle Point, Ore. are the sole surviving members of the family.

Brown was born on a farm near Des Moines, Iowa, on August 25, 1837.

Ogden Standard examiner, Sept. 25, 1926
[Further research shows that this Nancy Hanks was not the mother of Abe Lincoln]
