Cannon Cemetery (also known as Old Maple Falls Cemetery)

T40N R6E Section 30

Cannon Cemetery, sometimes called Old Maple Falls Cemetery, is located on the south side of Cemetery Rd in Maple Falls. To reach the cemetery, turn south at the intersection of the Mt. Baker Hwy/Hwy 542 and Silver Lake Road. Where Silver Lake Road turns to the right, angle to the southeast (left) onto Cascade Drive and continue a few hundred yards to Cemetery Road. Turn left and go up a hill about 100 ft. on Cemetery Road. The property along and south of this road has been fenced and a driveway has been laid through the cemetery. The remaining portion of Old Maple Falls Cemetery is just inside the fence to the west of the driveway. Most bodies were removed in 1925 when the new Maple Falls Cemetery was formed on Silver Lake Road, leaving only seven identifiable graves, although others may remain unmarked.

Thanks to Jim Cook for providing the information.

We did locate the cemetery but could only visually verify four markers. There are published cemetery transcripts that indicate several more are interred there but we could not find the markers due to heavy vegetation. The cemetery was on part of Judge James H. Cannon’s farm and the surrounding Cannon property has since been subdivided into small, heavily wooded home sites. It is obvious from the age of the trees that the area had been cleared when the Cannon’s were buried. A driveway to one of the sites actually cuts through the cemetery. *****************************************************************************************************************

Three polished stone markers are encircled by a wooden fence that we suspect was erected by members of the Cannon family:

* James Henderson Cannon *

* 02 March 1861 - 21 August 1934 *

(The birth date shown on a brass marker near his stone marker indicates birth as 04 March 1860 but our family records indicate 02 March 1861. Also, other published sources list his death date as 22 August 1934 but the same brass marker also indicates the correct date of death as 21 August 1934. This date is also confirmed by published newspaper reports of his death.)

* Carrie Elizabeth Tinker Cannon *

* 27 August 1870 - 27 November 1942 *

 * Blossom Irene Cannon Knight Lindholm *

* 22 March 1891 - 29 May 1946 *

We tried to move some of the vegetation inside the fence to expose other markers but discovered only what appeared to be two disintegrating concrete blocks we suspect were markers for two additional Cannon family members:

* Oscar Allen Knight Jr. *

(This person is not listed in the published transcripts nor can we positively identify a marker. However, we are certain of his existance and tragic drowning death from family records and since there are no other cemetery records we have found for this person, we assume that he is buried with his mother, Blossom Irene Cannon Knight. )

* Female Knight infant *

* 6 March 1914 - 6 March 1914 *

Just outside of the fenced area is a large rough stone marker:

* Thomas M. Hodges *

* 3 June 1835 - 19 June 1908 *

Published transcripts also indicate that the following are also interred in Old Maple Falls Cemetery but we could not find their markers:

* Infant Briggs *

* d ca. 1905-1910 *

* Child Call *

* Vera L. Laufman *

* 25 May 1901 - 5 September 1906 *

* William K. Laufman *

* d. 4 April 1909 *

* Ida Maude Wright Weatherby *

* b 7 October 1900 Rock Island, Illinois - 21 June 1938 *

* Earl Wright *

* d ca 1910 age 9 years. *
