McCarthy, Golda Esther
Golda Esther McCarthy entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, May 20, 2007. She was born on December 21, 1991, the shortest day of the year. It seems so appropriate as she stood only 4'11" at her tallest, She was born in Salt Fork, Oklahoma, to Delbert and Nora Smith, the baby of their family of 7: Lester, Sidney, Clarence, Dolly, Leona, Archie, and Golda. They've all passed on now. When she was 3 years old a cyclone hit their homestead. They moved several times, making their way West, and in 1926 they moved to Whatcom County. At 15 years old, a freshman at Ferndale High School, Golda met the love of her life, Ferndale High's football star, Farold McCarthy. She was 18 when she married Farold and together they raised 2 choldren and lived a beautiful life, never straying from Ferndale. Farold worked at Ferndale Grain, was a prestigious member of the Ferndale School Board and retired as the Ferndale Fire Chief before passing in 1977. They were married 48 years. Golda's pasttime was her garden; flowers, berries, vegetables and corn. She shared them all with family and friends. We also loved her crocheting, knitting, and rug braiding. She was an award-winning Ferndale Senior Center Volunteer. She loved meeting with and traveling with all her dear friends there. Golda will be very missed by this family: daughter, Delores Childress, and son , Larry McCarthy; by grandchildren: Bob and Lorraine Shumake, Craig and Sharon Riley, Chris and Erin Reinhart, Terry Pederson, and Jane Glen; by great-grandchildren, who called her "lil' Grandma": Rick Millard, Nick and Amber Millard, Kevin Bierman, David and Jaclyn Glen, Matt and Kerry Millard, Trisha and Ernie Pate; by Great-great-grandchildren: Caleb and Mikyla Millard, Bailey Glen, Tyler and Bailey Pate, Mike and Meadow Millard.
