Captain John Cassin was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and joined the United States Navy in 1799. He was stationed at various times at Washington Navy Yard and often acted for Commodore Tingey in his absence. During the War of 1812 he led the United States Navy in defense of Philadelphia. He died at Charleston South Carolina. In the above portrait, John Cassin is about fifty years of age, and was then working at Washington Navy Yard with his son, Lt., later, Commodore, Stephen Cassin who also served as a distinguished naval officer, John Casson's son, Stephen Cassin, served in the war against the Barbary Pirates, Stephen Cassin was later awarded a congressonal gold medal for his heroism in the war of 1812, at the Battle of Lake Champlain.
