Below is an interesting link for researchers and genealogists who want to examine the Congressional Cemetery, Washington DC.
The Congressional Cemetery was founded in 1807 and is today one of the largest and best documented cemeteries in the
District of Columbia. The cemetery name is somewhat misleading, since, although there are only few dozen U.S.
Congressman and Senators buried within its grounds, most of the present interments are ordinary citizens of the
District and surrounding communities. These include people in all categories and walks of life e.g. military figures,
Native Americans, police officers, firemen, mechanics, laborers and their family members.
The Congressional Cemetery staff is now engaged in an extensive project to photograph each headstone and
put the information on line for all to use. I first discovered the Congressional Cemetery, a few years ago, while
researching a history of the Washington Navy Yard civilian workforce (Many of the employees of WNY, both military
and civilians are buried in its grounds.) and found their staff very helpful and eager to be of service. They have also
put on line many contemporary obituaries and newspaper clippings regarding those interned.
