Probably taken during the early spring of 1904, cleanup of the damage caused by the fire of February 26-27, 1904 is progressing. A contemporary newspaper story reported that the state budgeted $3000 for the cleanup and that it planned to hire a crew of 75 workers.

The remains of a second floor corridor in the North Wing of the third Wisconsin Capitol after the fire of February 27-28, 1904. This photograph documents the damage near the Rotunda. Judge John Winslow recalled that the fire stopped short of the octagonal towers in the hallway, so that the portion of the newer portion of the North Wing escaped damage. The upper stairway led from the third floor to the attic over the Senate and Assembly where a sprinkler system had been installed during the Schofield administration. Through human error, the University reservoir that fed the sprinklers was drained shortly before the fire. Although they are charred in this image, this photograph provides the best extant documentation of the original door framing in the third Capitol.
