Founded 1834
It was initially part of the Michigan Territory, and attached to Brown county for judicial purposes until Aug. 25, 1835 when it became independent.
In 1846, territory was taken from Milwaukee county to create Waukesha county.

Portions of what is now Milwaukee County were inhabited by a number of Native American tribes, including the Sauk, Meskwaki or "Fox", Menomonee, Ojibwe and Potawotami.

Milwaukee County's county seat is Milwaukee.

It is the most populous county in Wisconsin.
