Shawano County's county seat is Shawano. Its name is from a modified Ojibwa term meaning "southern"; there was also a Menominee Chief Sawanoh. The Stockbridge-Munsee Community, (Mahican), is located in Shawano County in the towns of Bartelme, and Red Springs.
