Nutter, Jasper Newton
Born in Glenville, West Virginia, March 12, 1851, departed this life at Roy, New Mexico, February 19,1920. Was the youngest child of Christopher and Marie Nutter, a member of a family of seven, all of whom have preceded him except one brother, Preston Nutter of Salt Lake City, Utah, who was unable to be here. The deceased was left orphan when a mere child, his father passing away when he was four years of age and his mother departing this life when he was only eleven years of age.
Mr. Nutter was married December 7, 1879 to Sallie F. Harless and unto this union eight children were born, namely, Paul H. Nutter, Cimmarron, New Mexico, Nira B. Nutter, Dawson, New Mexico, Jasper P. C. Nutter, Price, Utah, T. Cleveland Nutter, Price, Utah, Shirley S. Nutter, Albuquerque, New Mexico, D. Stein Nutter, Willard, New Mexico, C. Lillian Nutter departed this life July 22, 1896, John R. Nutter, Roy, New Mexico.
He was a tender and loving husband and father and his death is deeply mourned by all his loved ones. For a number of years Mr. Nutter was almost a cripple from Rheumatism but he lived above his disability and was not deterred from homesteading a farm and making it pay. He was a great reader and thought much of  what he read so that he was able to converse intelligently on a variety of subjects. Those who were well acquainted with Mr. Nutter, held his word as inviolate and knew he was honest to the last cent. If he left no more for his posterity, these things in themselves are a rich inheritance for his children and a proud memory to his life companion. the funeral service was conducted at the home by O. W. Hearn, after which his body was laid to rest in Roy Cemetery. Source: The Spanish American (Roy, New Mexico) March 6, 1920  Transcribed by: Debbie Oberst

Smallridge, William B.
A Remarkable Case.
William B. Smallridge, who died a few days ago at Glenville, in Gilmer county, W. Va., carried a bullet in his heart for thirty-seven years. He was a member of Co. E. First West Virginia Infantry in the civil war, and in September 1861 while marching through Gilmer county was shot by someone in ambush, the bullet entering Smallridge's chest at the lower point of the scapula, on the left side, passing thence directly through the left lung into the left ventricle of the heart. The force of the bullet was so broken that it did not penetrate the inner wall, but the regimental surgeon pronounced the wound fatal and left Smallridge to die. He did not die, however, but was sent back up the Little Kanawha river in a skiff to his home, in Glenville, where he recovered and has since lived. A few weeks ago, while on his deathbed, he asked Dr. G. O. Brown to make an examination of the wound after his death. This Dr. Brown did and found the bullet imbedded in the heart. Surgeons pronounce it the most extraordinary case on record.  [Alexandria Gazette. (Alexandria, D.C.), November 19, 1898]
