Grant County was created from Hardy County and founded in February 14, 1866,
named in honor of General Ulysses Simpson Grant, it lies wholly in the
drainage basin of the Potomac River. It is one of the agricultural,

considerable coal development in its western edge where there is six
seams of workable coal. The county has an area of 461 square miles. It
is divided into three magisterial districts, Grant, Milroy, and Union. After the Civil War, there was an effort by former Confederates to name it 'Lee County' after General Robert E. Lee instead.
