The oath: I, A.B., do swear that I renounce and Refuse all Allegiance to George the Third, King of Great Britain, his heirs and Successors & that I will be faithful and bear true Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Free and Independent State and that I will not at any time do or cause to be done any Matter or thing that will be prejudicial or Injurious to the Freedom and Independence thereof as declared by Congress. And Also that I will discover and make known to Someone Justice of the Peace for the said state all treasons or traitorous Conspiracies which I now or hereafter shall know to be Formed against this or any of the United States of America, so help me God. The first 7 pages of a record book of Ohio County archives are lists of men who took the oath. This list was first published in a book titled GREATER WHEELING and VICINITY.
In these years Ohio County included territory from Cross Creek on the north to Middle Island Creek, and from the Ohio River east including the townships of Hopewell, Independence, Buffalo, Blaine, Donegal, East Finley, West Finley & parts of Canton, & Franklin in Washington Co., PA; also about one-third of Green Co.; & included Wetzel Co. a large portion of Tyler, Marion & Monongalia & perhaps more of West Virginia.
