Tyler County,
West Virginia 1888 Marriages
Through the State. Eloped with a
Married Man. A man of about forty winters, named
Ben Swiger, of Shirley, Tyler county, eloped with
Miss Sophronia Ash, daughter of Adam
Ash, a farmer living four miles from West Union, last
Monday, according to the Parkersburg Sentinel, taking the 4 o'clock
train for that city. The young lady is of respectable family,
handsome in appearance, and a rose-bud of seventeen summers. Swiger
is a married man, leaving a devoted wife and two loving children
behind. He decoyed the young lady to Parkersburg with the
understanding that she was to live with Dr. Bland
as a domestic, and her parents knew nothing of the elopement until
Friday, when they call to see their daughter and found she had not
been employed as above indicated. The father and brothers swear
vengeance when they see Swiger. The Wheeling
Sunday Register, December 18, 1888.
