ABOUT WYOMING: In July 1890, the Territory of Wyoming, which allowed women to vote, was admitted as a state. Wyoming became the first state with women suffrage. By 1900, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho joined Wyoming in allowing women to vote. See “History” navigation bar above.
Wyoming has the world’s thickest seam of coal (Campbell County). There are many coal mines, since 1925. Coal is very valuable with a low sulphur content, environmentally friendly. Wyoming \National Park Service photo produces a lot of oil and methane.
The name Wyoming was adopted from two Delaware Indian words, MECHEWEAMI-ING. To the Indians it meant "at the big plains," or "on the great plain," certainly appropriate for Wyoming
As you continue your genealogy search for ancestors, keep in mind the cattle trail drives from Texas, the OutLaw Trail, Military Forts and later years the gold, silver, coal, oil and methane. Many were looking for adventure in a new area. These are but a few of the reasons your ancesters arrived in Wyoming. Use the maps below for research
The Equality State: Wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote in 1890. This action lead to the nickname "The Suffrage State" and later to "The Equality State." "Equality" is also the state motto.
The Suffrage State: This was the precursor to "The Equality State" nickname. It came about when Wyoming granted the right to vote to women in 1869.
The Sagebrush State: This term was given to Wyoming because of the wild sage that is prevelent in some sections of the state.
The Cowboy State: Wyoming has officially adopted a cowboy on a bucking horse as a symbol of the state. This has lead some to refer to Wyoming as "The Cowboy State."
Big Wyoming: This name references the size of the state of Wyoming; 10th largest state in total area.
